Research Interests

In the Ryoo lab, we are interested in learning how cells make life-or-death decisions in face of stress. Distressed organelles, such as the endoplasmic reticulum, have ways to send stress signals to the nucleus to induce repair genes. Under certain conditions, chronic stress can cause death of vital cells that cannot be replaced, leading to degenerative diseases. In those cases too, signaling to the nucleus is involved, inducing pro-apoptotic genes that activate caspases and apoptosis. We are working to understand how these events occur using various genetic, cellular, and biochemical tools.
